family and floors

The yurt wasn’t up, but we at least could live at the land comfortably, meaning with water, a place to cook, and showers. It was in the middle of a hot spell, so it was 90 degrees during the day and about 70 at night, so comfortable is not how I would describe the nights with the two of us and 120 pounds of poodle in a tent with the rainfly permanently on, but we survived.

The following week, Bryan’s parents came, carrying wood floors from the Freyberg Family Tree Farm that his late grandfather had cut up, and that his father spent hours and hours planning so that they would be our wood floors. They are ash and are beautiful. So they arrived during that hot spell, sweated and worked with Bryan to get the yurt platform up and the wood floors down and I went off to the best wedding of the year in the Teton Valley.

I got to sleep in a bed, dress up pretty, watch two of the best people I know tie the knot, and be part of a wedding that warmed everyone’s hearts and made you want to hold your lover a little tighter. It was an absolutely lovely five days, but I wished many times that my sweetie were there beside me, dancing the hippie dance to bluegrass instead of sweating away in a little tent.

The day I returned a rainstorm came through and soaked through the coverings over the wood floors so the beautiful, nearly flawless wood floors soaked it up and warped and widened. When I got back I returned to heavyhearted Bryan and tears in my eyes. It felt like everyone had worked so hard on those floors and they were ruined. Rest assured, they look beautiful still. They’re all down, they dried out, got trimmed a little here and there, and are flat, gorgeous, and well loved, but it was a sad couple days.
